Career Planning for Telecommuters
An important realization is that career
planning isn't just for those people that work outside of the home.
Telecommuters should also have a career plan in order to move
forward and have a career that they are happy in.
When considering a career plan you need
to make a few decisions. You need to decide which direction you
would like your career to go, What type of work you would like to
do, what type of company you would like to work for, and among other
things, what benefits you would like as a telecommuter.
It's a good idea to make a written list
for yourself so that your ideas can be a bit more concrete instead
of just some abstract ideas in your head.
I like the idea of fist making a list of
questions that you have about your career. Try listing your ideas
and then write questions and answers regarding your ideas on paper.
Ideas such as "what type of work do I want to do working from
home?", "How much money do I want to make working from home?". How
many hours per day do I want to spend working?", "What sort of
benefits do I want or need from the company that I work for", "Where
can I find companies that hire people to work at home?". Write down
as many ideas regarding what you want in a career working at home.
This will help you to identify your wants and needs regarding your
career.
Just because you have chosen to work at
home does not mean that you have to settle for doing something that
you do not fully enjoy. If you enjoy working with numbers, look for
a telecommuting job in accounting. If you like computer programming,
look for a telecommuting job as a computer programmer. If you like
to type, look for a clerical or transcription job. There are as many
choices for the person that wants to work from home as there are for
people that work outside of the home. The only difference is the
main office location.
