Working At Home: The Right Choice

It’s demanding trying to be the best in both worlds:  career and family.  Working mothers sometimes feel that they have to choose between a successful career and family responsibilities.

Telecommuting or working at home provides a wonderful alternative for balancing both family and work.  It offers the flexibility that many families desire. 

With as many as half of the children in the United States being cared for by others, parents need to seriously look at their options.  The telecommuting option permits working parents to have the greatest influence over their children.

Children of “traditional” working families often spend more than three-quarters of their day with caregivers.  Studies have shown that daycare can have negative social and emotional effects on children.

Many experts agree that putting young children in daycare can put them at risk for lifelong problems.

Although, there are many quality childcare options, no one can substitute for the love and nurturing that comes from a parent.

As a mother of four, I’ve been on both sides of the “fence”.  During my oldest daughter’s early years, I had the typical corporate office job.  I worked 40+ hours a week.  With the commute and job demands, I often spent 55 hours or more away from home and my child.

I felt my “heart strings” pull as I dropped her off on days when she experienced the infamous anxiety separation.  I rushed through the days of tears and sad good-byes.  Evenings with only time for dinner, a bath and bed were commonplace.  I saw firsthand the consequences of having others care for my precious one.

After the birth of my second child, I slowly treaded the waters of telecommuting thru Work At Home Jobs.  They are very helpful in finding thousands of women and men work at home positions like typing, billing, bookkeeping, computer programming, phone work, mystery shopping, assembly work at home, mailing circulars etc. Working at home allowed me to be there for the first words, the first steps and the first tooth.  I was able to leave my work and tend to their needs at a moments notice.  If they were ill, I could cuddle them and do my work after they were tucked into bed.  I started to experience less career stress and the true joys of being a “mommy”.

I discovered that family was much more important than career and I could successfully accomplish both.  There’s nothing more rewarding than working on a project in the early morning hours and being greeted by my two year old, complete with “bed head” and blanket in hand, “Good morning, mommy!”  I know beyond a shadow of a doubt- I made the right choice!

Telecommuting has provided me the opportunity for greater parent child interaction.  While working at home, I’ve been able to take advantage of those teachable moments.  Bonding happens naturally, the way that it was intended, and “quality time” doesn’t have to be scheduled.

My children have benefited from seeing me work at  home.  They have a grasp of what I do for a living.  Additionally, telecommuting has given my children the opportunity to be with each other during the day.  Unlike many daycare settings that segregate children by age.  I’ve seen firsthand the sibling bonding that has taken place among my children.  It’s been magical watching the increased love and respect that they have developed for each other.

I’ve found telecommuting to provide the perfect balance.  I have a successful career while raising a flourishing family.  The benefits are everlasting.
